What is Kitesurfing - Explained

Air Padre Describes - What is Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing in the Waves

Kitesurfing (commmonly referred to as kite surfing, sky surfing, and kiteboarding) is a variation of the sport that deals with riding in the waves. In the United States, we denote kitesurfing as performing the sport on a surfboard while attempting to ride waves with the kites, hence the surfing. However, don't be surprised when you meet Europeans, South Americans, and people from outside the US refer to kitesurfing as the general sport of riding a board with a kite. They call everything kitesurfing, where the States generally calls everything kiteboarding, and only wave-riding as kitesurfing. If you want to learn more about the big air, freestyle, and general sport, please refer to the what is kiteboarding? page.

Riding waves while kite surfing proposes an added difficulty to the sport. Not only are you controlling the kite with your arms and body, keeping aware of its placement in the sky and power it's delivering, but you must also concentrate on where you're going in relation to oncoming waves. Kite surfing is a more difficult form of the sport and you need to have quite a bit of experience before heading into the ocean. Most people learn first in shallow flat water then make their way into the surf.

The kitesurfing equipment that is used can sometime vary slightly. Useful items such as sliding harness bars, specific wave kites, surfboards, and skimboards are all heavily used in the waves. They have specific purposes that make the ride smoother and easier. Some opt to wear floatation vests for added safety.
