South Padre Island offers some of the best kiteboarding weather in the United States. We have warmer water later into the winter and earlier in the spring than almost any other state. The average day time wind speed is 15 knots, perfect for learning. Learning almost anything is easier in moderate wind with a larger kite, the pull is more consistant and a larger kites are easier to control than small zippy kites. The bay never gets big swell because it is shallow. Being an arid climate the chances of getting rained out are quite low, we average just over 20 inches (50 cm) of rain per year.

WARNING!!! Electrical activity (lightening) shows up as small black squares, WARNING!!!
Tides above the 2-3 foot line often flood the North Flats. The South Flats has higher ground close to the water and is often used in cases of unusually high tides. Also a super high tide makes the center of the bay too deep to stand up in. Still plenty of shallow water along the island for miles and miles. There are very few obstacles under the water to woory about. Fisherman have marked most of these with PVC pipes which are sticking out of the water.
Holly Beach Wind Forcast
KPIL - Cameron County Airport
Winds at this spot are known to be awesome for southwesterlies, boasting some of the steadiest wind you can find. Unfortunatly the launch is sketchy, Plenty of kite-eating-catus. We often drive across the bay and find wind when there isn't enough on the island side of the bay. We can launch anywhere from the boats, and have scouted out several tiny islands to launch from as well. If theres no wind and you want to skip the launch call us and see if there is a wind search party heading out.

Eastern Gulf of Mexico Wave Height Map
We often have 2-4 foot waves which are nice for beginner and intermediate kitesurfers. We also get 4-6 foot days, and some 6-8 foot days. WATCH OUT FOR TOURISTS! Find and open spot to setup and lauch, help us keep our beach acess.
