February 19th, 2011 - The spring season is one of the best times to visit South Padre Island to kiteboard. Warm weather and consistent wind make it the greatest place in the world to learn how to kiteboard. The water temperature is currently warm enough to even go without a wetsuit! The wind has been blowing strong throughout the winter, and is predicted get better for the months of March, April, May and June. Here at Air Padre we have put together a few commonly asked questions to aid you in planning spring time kiteboarding vacations to South Padre Island.
Learning how to kiteboard on SPI is easy and fun! kiteboarding lessons and kiteboarding camps are held in the flat water of the Laguna Madre Bay. Three things that stand out that make learning so easy here are: waist seep water throughout the entire bay, full boat support by Air Padre instructors, and water proof radio helmets for every student. Air Padre supplies all the modern kiteboarding equipment, safety gear, and positive attitude to get you up and riding the kiteboard. All you need to do is show up and be ready to have the time of your life learning the new and exciting sport. Reservations are highly recommended as the spots fill up fast. Call the shop at 956-299-9463 to schedule your lesson date and time.
To make your stay easier, we work with a few different hotel and condo agencies to provide you with the best choices for accommodations. Wind Water Hotel (956) 761-4913 is located directly next to the shop and is great for anyone taking kiteboarding lessons. You can simply wake up and walk over to the shop to check on the wind and lesson time. Casa Bella Hotel (956) 761-7700 is also located within walking distance of the shop. For better access to the kiteboarding beach, check out La Quinta Hotel (956) 772-7000, or the Hilton (956) 761-8700 at the north end of the island. They are both directly across the street from the kiteboarding flats. Alternatively, if you would like a family oriented condominium rental, Call Parklane Condos (979) 820-0245. They are within walking distance of the beach and our shop.
Spring time on SPI has some of the best wind of the year. Strong south winds blow day after day, making for epic side shore conditions in both the flat water side of the island as well as the Gulf of Mexico side. Water and air temperatures are generally both in the 70s (Fahrenheit) and stay that way. If you have never been to SPI during the spring, then get ready to witness some fantastic wind conditions. You can expect to use your full quiver as the winds will range anywhere from 15 - 35 mph. Sunny conditions make it a great place to vacation for kiteboarding, while the family can hang out at the beach or by the pool.
There are two major airports located close to the island. Brownsville (BRO) is located 30 minutes inland, and Harlingen (HRL) is 50 minutes inland. Harlingen is the larger airport. Most people will rent a car and drive to the island for convenience, able to use it throughout their kitesurfing vacation. However, there is a South Padre shuttle that runs from the harlingen airport directly to the island for only $20 each way. And there is also a free bus on South Padre Island that you can catch anywhere on the island once you make it here.
Air Padre is the most well equipped kiteboard shop on the island. We stock all kitesurfing equipment from several major kiteboarding companies, as well as a great selection of accessories and kite repair items. Kites, boards, bars and lines from Slingshot, Best, Wainman Hawaii, Ozone, Ocean Rodeo, Litewave, Aboards, Spleene and many more! We also have revamped our kite repair area to be able to handle more repairs in the busy season. We can fix bladders, canopy tears, air leaks, and everything else! Stop by the shop located at 5709A Padre Blvd, or call us anytime (956) 299-9463. We are open 7 days a week, 9am - 5pm.
There are alot of other activities to do on South Padre. The island is great for fishing, shopping, going to the beach, dolphin watches, horseback riding, jet skiing, and many other things to do. Air Padre also offers services such as surfing lessons, kayak and SUP rentals, and wakeboarding! No matter what your outdoor interest is you, you will most likely find it here.
The SPI Kite Round-Up is a great spring kiteboarding event. This year the SPI Kite Round-Up will be May 18th-22nd on the South Flats of South Padre Island. The event, which has its own website - www.spikiteroundup.com, will be the largest equipment demo in the nation. Also, there are several amateur kiteboarding competitions that occur throughout the weekend. Check out the website for more information!
