SPI Beach Patrol Learns About
Kite Safety
South Padre Island, Texas, May 27th, 2010 - When water sport enthusiasts are conversing with the entire local beach patrol, normally it's not a good situation. However, Brett Newcomb, head instructor of Air Padre Kiteboarding, thinks it is possible to have a positive relationship between kiteboarders and authority figures. Brett recently organized and met with the entire South Padre Island Beach Patrol to brief them on the safety behind the growing sport of kiteboarding.
As many of the beach goers know, kiteboarders along the coastline within the City of South Padre Island can appear quite elegant, even effortless. Brett met with the lifeguards to teach them about the potential dangers involved in kiteboarding, how the equipment works, and how to safely rescue a kitesurfer when things don't go so eloquently. The goal of the meeting, held at City beach access 17, was to have all of the lifeguards leave the class with improved knowledge about kite safety.
Brett Newcomb gave an hour ground lesson emphasizing the safety in the sport. Air Padre's kiteboarding equipment was set up to give a clear visual of what the lifeguards would encounter in a rescue situation. Attention was placed on disabling the kiteboarding kites, handling the gear, and getting the kiteboarder and rescuer back to shore without complication. "It feels good to do the right thing", Brett remarked after the meeting, and he was pleased to see that the life guards were genuinely interested in knowing about the safety features.
The South Padre Beach Patrol is new, but already has had a positive impact on the community's confidence in our beach safety. Rip currents, marine life, and strong waves, are just a few general swimming concerns why the SPI Beach Patrol patrols every day from 10:00am to 7:00pm. "We will continue doing our part", Brett says, as water sports enthusiasts to keep the local authorities informed and knowledgeable on all subjects to keep the general public safe.
