Members of the Air Padre Kiteboarding team recently took a week long adventure to kitesurf the island of Puerto Rico! The kitesurfing holiday in late January 2010 was filled with excitement, sun, wind, and waves. With seven straight days of wind in the secret spot along the Puerto Rico coast, it was some of the best kitesurfing conditions we could have asked for. Warm temperatures along with sun and wind made for some well deserved relaxation, as well as picture taking surroundings.
The secret spot on the coast of Puerto Rico was definitely not for amateurs. The coastline was all rock and coral with exposed pieces on the upwind area. We had to learn the layout of the water before venturing into the peeling waves to ensure or safe arrival back to South Padre Island, Texas. Head high waves pitched as they ran across the coral reef ocean floor, which meant that crashing kitesurfing kites was not an option. As the waves began to break on the coral reef, you can kite surf them down the line, staying downwind of danger. The waves were great for carving and throwing huge fan sprays. Besides the advanced kite boarding abilities necessary to just get some waves rides, staying upwind was the only way to ride the spot. This had some of us not so stoked, since we are used to the ease of South Padre Island down winders, and seemed to lose our upwind riding skills! We pulled it together and remembered back when we could ride up wind, and were able to uproot those old skills.
The island of Puerto Rico is basically a rectangle and is the smallest and most eastern island in the Greater Antilles. The island is hilly and mountainous with palm trees and thick vegetation covering the island. The coastlines are beautiful compositions of crystal clear blue water and large Caribbean waves. The weather that we endured while visiting in the month of January was quite warm, with spots of rain clouds. While there was a steady ocean breeze that blew the entire trip. Contact us if you would like more information about the island and its kite boarding potential!
