Kitesurfing Holiday on South Padre Island
South Padre Island, Texas has become a popular kiteboarding destination for many people travelers. Steady winds, in a sub-tropical climate, combined with miles of shallow water to practice on is a huge draw. For those who are planning their South Padre vacation around kiteboarding lessons or camps, we have compiled some resources to answer a few commonly asked questions. Including, the best seasons for wind and weather, where to stay, local transportation, and other family activities on the island.
The fall and spring are the busiest times of the year to schedule kiteboarding lessons on South Padre Island (so call ahead!). October through December and March through June is when the air and water temperatures are very comfortable, the wind is great, and families are able to take time off. This is leads to an increase in the amount of lessons we take out - for good reason. If you are planning on taking a trip during those months, please call ahead, and we will be happy to schedule your lesson, give advice on local accommodations and answer any other questions.
Although people travel here to kiteboard in the fall and spring months more so than the others, the winter and summer seasons have great things to offer as well. Being located on South Padre, Air Padre has the advantage of year round kiteboarding conditions. Winter and summer are still very windy and warm (winter water temperatures stay above 60 degrees Fahrenheit) . These seasons are able to accommodate those who can only vacation at that time of the year. With less crowds and tons of wind in the winter, you may find the island to be the most enjoyable kiteboarding destination out there. Alternatively, summer offers alot of tourist activities and many other things to do during the night/day in addition to great kiteboarding.

There is no airport located directly on South Padre Island, however there are two major airports that are just inland. Brownsville Airport (BRO) is a 30 minute drive from the island. Harlingen International Airport (HRL) is a 50 minute drive inland. There are several inexpensive shuttles to and from the island, as well as local free bus system on South Padre. No matter what your budget is, South Padre has an incredible variety of hotels, motels, condos or camping available. Located directly next to the Air Padre shop is Wind Water Hotel and Resort, which can be reached at 956-761-4913. Otherwise, La Quinta Inn (956-772-7000) and Casa Bella Resort Hotel (1-877-224-7700) are both within a mile of the shop. For South Padre condominium rentals, you can call Parklane Condo Rentals (979-820-0245) or Furcron Rentals (1-800-TX-COAST). There is also a KOA Campground at the south end of the island. Or you can camp on the beach at the north end of the city for only a $3 fee for car access.
