December Kiteboarding on SPI
This past December of 2010 was fantastic for kiteboarding and kitesurfing. Strong winds blew day after day out of the north and the south all month long, and the daily temperatures averaged near 60° and 70°F. There were several days when south winds blew so strongly that many kite boarders were hesitant to go out until the wind speeds reduced later in the day!
The Air Padre team did not take these conditions for granted, and took the opportunity to kitesurf in the Gulf of Mexico as well go big with freestyle sessions in the Laguna Madre. We have collected a few kiteboarding photos in our new kiteboard picture gallery to show for this. Brett and Mark Newcomb worked all month teaching introduction through advanced kiteboarding lessons to those here on their winter break. And they did a great job getting many new kiteboarders stoked on the sport!
South Padre Island has become a serious destination for people looking to learn kiteboarding or practice kitesurfing during the fall months of October - November. However, many don't realize the potential to kite during the winter months on the island. For one, SPI is located on the same latitude as Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (26 °); which means year round warm conditions. The wind, being another large factor, stays consistently strong throughout December, January and February. All while decreased crowds and tourists make for all the space on the bay or the beach you can want!
If you get the chance this winter, head down to windy South Padre, or else plan for next winter. Remember, just because the crowds go away, doesn't mean the wind does, as Paul and Brett will show you below in the December shots below.
