Spoil Bank Kiteboarding (Part Two)
The North Flats kiteboard beach is a fantastic place to kiteboard when visiting South Padre Island. Wide open kite launches, shallow water, and a lot of friendly faces. However, have you ever wondered what the conditions are like way out in the middle of the bay? The APK crew has, and it inspired the second part of a kiteboard adventure series - a trip to the spoil banks in the Laguna Madre Bay.
The South Padre Island Spoil Banks is a premier riding spot, located approximately 3 miles straight out in middle of the bay. Half way between South Padre and Port Isabel, a dredged boating channel exists. On the west side of the channel, sand is displaced from the the continual dredging of the ship channel. This makes for a very shallow and smooth area of water about 1-2 feet deep, similar to many sand bar riding spots in the Florida Keys. The wind blows more steady in this area with less fluctuations than the island breeze, although the spot is only obtainable only by boat.
On this trip, the Air Padre crew gathered some team riders, camera gear, kiteboard equipment, and took off on an exceptionally windy afternoon. Seen in the photos below are Monte Cantu (riding his 2011 Ozone 9m C4 kite and 2011 ABoards X-series kiteboard), and Alex Bloechinger (riding a 2011 Slingshot 9m RPM kite and 2011 Slingshot Misfit kiteboard). Both riders were thrilled with the location and it didn't take long before kite loops, front rolls, raleys and more were being performed directly in front of the cameras. A big thanks goes to Monte and Alex for riding aggressively at the newly uncovered spot.
Our purpose is to discover and publicize the many different kiteboard spots that South Padre Island has to offer. To showcase them to the kiting world, and ensure the growth of the sport at this world-class kiteboarding destination. We hope to inspire others to seek out your own unique riding spots and post your sessions on our Facebook page for us to see! Part 2 of APK adventures went fantastic and we are looking forward to our next riding location. If you missed part 1 of the adventure, be sure to check it out and see what the South Padre Fishing Shacks produced!
