Jim Tulberg recently took kiteboarding lessons with Air Padre Kiteboarding on South Padre Island, Texas. Even though Jim has a prosthetic leg, that does not hold him back from exploring his kiteboarding passion. Read what Jim had to say about his lesson...
I want to express my appreciation to Air Padre Kiteboarding for their help at taking my kiting skills to the next level.
I had the chance to take a lesson from them recently where I wanted to concentrate on the consistency of my transitions.
The instructor had a keen eye in evaluating my skills and then adapting a lesson plan to get the most out of the session.
As a congenital below knee amputee, I have always pushed myself to the limit and never let my prosthesis prevent me from being athletic. With a lot of hard work and commitment, I was fortunate to compete internationally as a member of the U.S. Disabled Alpine Ski Team for six years after college. This experience opened up doors to a long career in the health and fitness industry where I was able to continue to pursue my passions of an active lifestyle (skiing, mtn. biking, hiking, etc.).
After being transferred to the Portland, OR area in 2006, I quickly became intrigued with the kiting scene in the Gorge. I finally took the plunge in 2008, and made the commitment to succeed at becoming skilled at this great new sport. Though I had some initial challenges, once I was able to get the right set of equipment and with a few minor changes to my board, I was off and riding. I currently reside in Austin, Texas, so I try and get escape to SPI for a long weekend anytime the forecast is looking solid. The conditions in SPI are like having a foot of fresh powder in the Rocky Mountains; World Class Wind = World Class Kiting.
I again want to express my gratitude to everyone at Air Padre Kiteboarding as they are a top notch team and I will recommend anyone I can to their doorstep.
Trust me, you will enjoy your time and definitely improve your skills. Hopefully before long I’ll be catching big air!
In good health,
Jim Tulberg - Austin, TX
