2016 Summer Olympics - hosted in Rio de Janiero, Brazil - for the first time will include Kiteboarding as an event. In early May,
the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the inclusion of kiteboarding course racing as an Olympic sport for both men and women!
As of early 2012, The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) has confirmed the final event, race boards, kites, and other equipment for the Rio 2016 Olympic
Sailing Competition.
Air Padre has been excited to hear about this news because we believe it will have a lot of benefit to the general kiteboarding community. The Olympics will expand the reach of kiteboarding as more people will understand what this growing sport really is capable of. Many kiteboarding professionals such as Damien Leroy (an avid supporter of the SPI Kite Round-Up), Adam Koch, Bryan Lake, John Heineken, and others have been persuing their passion of making kiteboarding an Olympic sport for a number of years now through the USA course racing circuit.
Great strides have been made in recent years for course racing due to the advent of course racing specific boards and kites. These new race boards that are being used for training for the 2016 Olympics are incredibly unique shapes. The designs of these boards are much different than traditional twin tips or even surfboards. Significantly wider, flatter, and floatier are a few of the major characteristics that define race boards. Additionally, large fins and multi footstrap configurations have really accelerated their usefulness in the sport. Luckily for all those interested in honing their Olympic trial times, the Air Padre team has ordered up some course race boards to our shop on South Padre Island! They will be available to rent late summer and throughout the 2012 kiteboarding season in our world-class kiteboarding location.
