2010 Fall Wind Season Begins on South Padre

Season Opener North Wind kicks off coastal downwinders

Monday September 27th, 2010 - South Padre Island has the season opener norther. Winds blowing 20-25mph, pushing up head high waves, and the classic end of the road downwinder was the call. Initially there appeared to be too much west in the wind to pass the buildings back in town. However, either the wind shifted or it was a mis-read, but we came all the way back to the shop and saved a cab fair. The fat kids were riding 12m - 13m kites and the middle weights were rocking 9m kites. Water temperature: 80 degrees, air temperature: 89 degrees.

The 8 mile downwinder from the end of town back to Air Padre kite shop is one of the greatest oceanside downwinders available in the world. Steady wind and head high waves along the entire coast make for an exhaustingly fun trip. A kite boarder has the ability to choose his or her favorite break and ride down the coast on the side shore winds. Next time you are on SPI, stop in at Air Padre to get the entire scoop on the downwinders the island has to offer, best launches and landings, local rules, and best times to go.

The season opener north wind marks the beginning of great things to come this fall. Summer is over and the fall wind patterns are starting to show their face. Strong winds from the north and south will continue in warm south Texas for many months. If you are thinking of taking a kitesurfing vacation to South Padre for a kiteboarding camp or kiteboarding lesson, then the fall is one of the two absolute best times of the year to visit!
